Are you a Minibus Driver ?

In July 2013, the NUT contacted the DfE to clarify certain aspects of the regulations on school minibuses, in particular:
  • driver licensing conditions;
  • the definition of ‘hire or reward’; and
  • the Section 19 Permit scheme.
The NUT expressed concerns about the potential for confusion arising from different interpretations of the regulations.

At a similar time, the DfE conducted a review of its guidance on school minibuses.  The review involved the DfE, the Department of Transport (DfT), the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) and the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO).  Following publication of the revised guidance in August 2013, the DfE gave assurances to the NUT that the correct advice had been included in the new document.

NUT guidance on school minibus safety has been amended accordingly, and can be found by clicking here.      You can also download the DfE guidance, Driving School Minibuses: Advice for Schools and LocalAuthorities.

NUT Health and Safety Reps are encouraged to bring both the NUT and the DfE guidance to the attention of school management and governors.
